So I'm completing my first spray can job and am becoming frustrated with the ease at which the color can become scratched and what not. Anyone know of a good protective clear coat that comes in spray can form? Any advise is welcome.

Iowa Cyclists Sidelined By Tacks In Tires Cyclists Participating In 400-Mile Ride Across State
POSTED: 9:32 am EDT July 24, 2008
AMES, Iowa -- Dozens of Iowa cyclists were sidelined by a possible prank during their ride Wednesday morning, reported KCCI-TV in Des Moines, Iowa.
"I heard a small pop out of the tire," said Doris Sherman, a participant in the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI, which is a more than 400-mile ride across the state.
Sherman pulled over in Colo, Iowa, where she found dozens of other cyclists lined up at a repair shop. That's when she discovered the source of her problem, a small tack.
Story County Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald said tacks were dumped along the white lines of the eastbound lanes in three different stretches of old Lincoln Highway.
"Bikes have been falling off left and right with tires. I've come across some people who have had gone through three or four tubes on their bike tires already," Fitzgerald said.
Dave Hendricks, who was fixing the trashed tires, said his crew had pulled at least 50 tacks out of tires in just a couple hours.
"We got here about 6 o'clock and they started showing up right after that. We've been repairing mostly tubes here, bunches of them," Hendricks said.
County road crews carefully navigated through the crowd of bikers trying to clear the road of any additional tacks.
"It's too bad that some people are inconsiderate of others, but we riders still go on. (It) doesn't stop us from riding," Sherman said.
Sheriff's deputies are looking into the case, but they said it's difficult because while they assume the tacks were intentionally placed along the road, they don't know that for sure.

What is the difference between long cage and short cage front derailleurs? I’m assuming it’s more than aesthetic.

Goddamn, have I met so many bikepirates on this crazy serendipitous road-trip I'm on.
Thanks to seditiouscanary for riding me home, and to novabird for being my new Seattle friend (and apparently my twin?) and to skazat for letting me hang around for so damn long in Denver right before your France adventure, to manintheboat for lunch, to lushest_lust for picnics and good conversation by the Poudre--- Maybe I'm perhaps tipsy (what?), but you bikepirates fucking rock.
Oh, and here's a kitten

| 11 days. I think. 1500m. ne marche pas |
[22 Jul 2008|10:10pm] |
Remember that, "Hey, I'm going to tour on a 24 spoke wheel with the non-drive side radial patterned?"
Well, it's not broken, but I broke the first spoke, around... 11? days in and 1500km. Which, cripes is a lot of mileage for 11 days.
Anyways, provided this thing is fixable, can anyone tell me what the tool is to take off the cassette cluster (the broken spoke is on this side, and I can't do it myself) (bonus points if you know the name of it in French!). Also, are those emergency nylon spokes worth their salt?
The spoke broke around 4km from a town with a Decathlon, (Google Maps is telling me) 5 bike shops, a McDonalds - which is great for free Wifi and I've already found the Office du Tourisme, so I'm not exactly stuck. If I can find a plot of grass before it gets really dark to lay a tent, I'll be cool. Wish me luck and hello from France!

OK, leave aside the notion she's riding brakeless on her first fixie.
I can't help but get the feeling that wooden bars leave open the interesting chance of snapping them and impaling yourself in a bad crash. OK, they would likely snap just by the stem clamp so the wooden spear-point wouldn't be very long, but even so...

So let's say that a certain bike has a headtube angle of 68.5 degrees with a 529mm axle-crown fork. Let's also say that I wanted to attach to the bike a certain fork that has an axle-crown measurement of 540mm. I know the rough guideline of adding an inch of travel decreases the head angle by about a degree, so what would you reckon the head angle would be in this particular instance? 68 flat? If that's the case, I've found the combination I want.

Anyone have any recommendations for touring Nova Scotia? We've got about ten days to work with, and plan to start from the ferry in Yarmouth. I would love to make it to PEI but also want to prioritize leisure and relaxation and keep the daily miles relatively low. Any recommended books, routes, maps...or particularly nice campgrounds, beaches, or B&Bs? I've found a few sites, but would love some first-hand tips.

| Renting bikes in London |
[21 Jul 2008|09:04am] |
Hi, pirates!
I'm going to be in London for a couple of weeks next month, and would like to know where to go to rent a couple of bikes for my husband and I to ride around on. I don't mind what kind, as long as they're sensible for the road, but SPD pedals would be a huge bonus. Can anyone recommend some shops? We're staying with folks in St. John's Wood, so anywhere in zones 1 or 2 would probably be fine. Taking the thing on the tube might be too much of an adventure for me.
Also, is there anything I should watch out for while I'm there, since I'm from the US and used to riding around Seattle? I'll be with a native Briton, so I'm not too worried, but I confess that I'm a little nervous about remembering to ride on the left.
Thanks!
